Well, here we are with the first cold weather starting to come. We had fun up on Queenstown Hill a couple of weeks ago pulling out more pines. We had snow flurries, and cold winds but still managed to pull out about another 750 trees.

Next Wilding pine day is 21 May, 2012, up on Queenstown Hill. It is great to see how the different parts are linking up now, and the progress can be seen. 442-6699 is the phone number to ring if interested. It is fun, so please come and join us.

Then, yep, more to come, on the 4th June, which is the holiday day for Queens Birthday we are going back to Coopers Terrace to carry on uncovering the old stone ruins from the goldmining days. The area will be sprayed in the next week, which will make it easier.

We will go there about 1-30pm till about 5-00pm or so. You can either meet us at the Chinese Settlement, or go out with us from town.

Nomad Safaris will supply refreshment and some tools, but if you have tools and gloves please bring them with you. Look forwarding to having you all on board.

Had a wonderful afternoon up Queenstown Hill on Monday afternoon, once again tackling the problem of wilding pines. Had a team of 15 enthusiastic volunteers, and we managed to cover a huge part of the hill, taking out just over 4500 trees.

Our total for the year is now adding up, even tho we are just into March. 1200 3 weeks ago, 4500 this time, and one of our drivers Graeme had been up there and pulled out over 500 in two afternoons.

Next afternoon is going to be 26th March, 2012, 1-30pm, meeting at our Gorge Road Depot. Please ring 442-6699 if you are interested. The more the merrier.

Monday 13th February, is going to be the start of Nomads Wilding Pine Summer project for 2012. Once again we are going up Queenstown Hill to start hitting them on the head etc, so the pines don’t get away on us.

Conifers, or where we are going pines are a huge problem, and if we let them get away on us there will be none of the pristine mountains left, farmers will lose alot of their land to the pines, and our eco system will die out.

Please, if you are not working, would you come along with us as it is amazing what an impact we can have in an afternoon. Would love to have as many people as possible. It is fun and quite a social affair.

Nomads will supply vehicles and refreshments, and yep as it is hot please bring alot of water, sunscreen and a hat. If you have tools please bring them too, but we will have some with us.

We will be leaving Nomads yard at 1-30pm in Gorge Road, so if people could come in about 1-20pm that would be great. If you are interested in coming please let Nomads dispatch know, on 442-6699.

Look forward to seeing you.

Well, we are going to start on our Wilding Pine projects for 2012 shortly. This is something that we need to keep on top of, and keep pulling the pests out or they will get away on us. If there is anyone interested in coming on board this year, please email fran@nomadsafaris.co.nz, and give your phone number and email address to the staff there. It is suprisingly fun, and a great time to get to know new people along with helping our local environment.

Sunday 5th June is World Environment Day. Nomad Safaris is doing something particularly exciting this year to celebrate this Day. We are going to be clearing around Coopers Terrace, at the start of the Macetown Track. It is covered by alot of noxious plants.

Coopers Terrace is a relic of the goldmining days, and for me this is particularly poignant as next year is the 150 year celebration of goldmining coming to our area.

Susie Geh from DOC, and Bill Nolan from the Historical Society will be joining us for this.

We would love as many volunteers as possible to come along and take part in this project. We will be meeting at Nomad Safaris Base on the corner of Gorge Road and Industrial Place at 1-30 where transport will be provided out to Arrowtown, or alternatively we can meet you at the Chinese Settlement at 1-45.

Nomads will provide refreshments, and take some tools out, but if you have secauteurs, loppers and gloves please bring them along.

Once again if you would like to ring Nomads on 442-6699 to register your interest, we are assured of not leaving you behind. Looking forward to seeing you this Sunday.
